Common questions

Answers to what comes up most.

Recording & scoring

The app doesn't seem to hear me

First check that Murattil has microphone permission in Settings → Murattil → Microphone. Then make sure no other app is holding the microphone, and that your device isn't muted. Murattil only listens while a recording session is open and visible on screen; there is no background listening.

My accuracy score seems lower than it should be

Check first that you are on the ayah you think you are — scoring against the wrong ayah is the most common cause of an unexpectedly low result. Then run Microphone Calibration from the Profile tab, which tunes scoring to your specific device. Recite at a steady pace in as quiet a room as you can. Scoring is approximate by design and varies with your microphone, background noise, recitation speed and dialect.

Scoring is slow, or fails with a network error

Recitation scoring runs on our GPU servers rather than on your phone, so it needs an active internet connection. If you are on a weak or metered connection, results will be slower.

I hit a limit on how much I can practise

We rate-limit recitation scoring to keep the service available to everyone: 20 requests per hour without an account, and 100 per hour when you are signed in. Creating a free account raises your limit and keeps your progress.

Audio & connectivity

Reference recitation won't play or download

Reference audio streams from the internet. Audio you have played in Hifz is kept in a small cache on your device so it replays faster. If playback misbehaves, clearing the app cache in your device settings will force a fresh download. Clearing it does not affect your account or progress.

Does Murattil work offline?

Mostly not. The Quran text is loaded from our servers and recitation scoring runs on them, so both need an internet connection. Prayer times and the Qibla compass do work offline, because they are calculated on your device. Reference audio you have played in Hifz is kept in a small cache so it replays faster, but that is not a full offline mode.

Prayer times & Qibla

My prayer times look wrong

Prayer times are calculated on your device. Open Prayer Settings and check the calculation method — conventions differ by region and by mosque — and apply a manual correction if your local mosque uses a different timing. Always verify against your local mosque before relying on them for worship.

The Qibla compass is unstable or points the wrong way

The compass reads your device magnetometer, which is easily disturbed. Move away from metal, speakers, laptops and phone cases with magnets, then calibrate by moving your device in a figure-eight motion. Both the Qibla bearing and prayer times are computed entirely on your device; your location never reaches our servers.

Account, sign-in & your data

I forgot my password

Use the password reset link on the sign-in screen. We email a time-limited, single-use code to your registered address. If it does not arrive within a few minutes, check your spam folder before trying again.

How do I delete my account?

Open the Profile tab and choose Delete Account. For your protection we email a one-time verification code to your registered address before the deletion proceeds. Your account is deactivated immediately, the underlying records are purged from our production systems within 7 days, and rotated out of encrypted backups within 30 days.

How do I remove my microphone calibration?

Open the Profile tab, go to Microphone Calibration and delete the saved profile. You can do this on its own without deleting your account — scoring simply falls back to the default, untuned settings.

How do I stop sending crash and performance diagnostics?

Open the Profile tab and turn off Share Diagnostics. Diagnostics are off until you agree to them — we ask once, the first time you open the app, and if you decline nothing is collected. The switch works with or without an account. Turning it off stops collection straight away so far as the reporting software allows, and takes full effect the next time you open the app. Diagnostics never include your recitation audio or transcriptions.

Can I use Murattil without an account?

Yes. Reading, reference recitations, prayer times and the Qibla compass all work without registering, and limited anonymous practice is available. Anonymous use creates no profile and keeps no progress, and it cannot be transferred to an account later.

What you need to run Murattil

  • An iPhone on iOS 16 or later. An Android version will follow.
  • Microphone access — required for recitation practice.
  • An internet connection for reading the Quran and for recitation scoring. Prayer times and Qibla work offline.
  • Location or motion access is optional, and used only on your device for prayer times and Qibla.

Still stuck?

Write to hello@murattil.com and tell us what you were doing, what you expected, and what happened instead. If it is a bug, sending it through Profile → Help & Feedback → Report a Bug attaches your app version and device details automatically, which saves a round trip.
